Unwanted in Isekai Chapter 10. Adventurer Guild

Leaving the ramparts, we followed the road straight ahead and found a sign with the shape of a barrel, which we were told was the next landmark.

Turning and walking a short distance, we found the adventurer’s guild.

「Ooh, so this is the adventurer’s guild」

I looked at the three-story stone structure in front of me.

Since the moment Euphy mentioned guilds, I had a vague idea of what she was talking about, and I’m still impressed by the fact that the adventurer guild from fantasy stories exists.

The door to the first floor is wide open, and the atmosphere is quite easy to enter.

Stepping inside, we found ourselves in a large space with round tables that you’d think it’s a bar at first glance.

The place is sparsely populated, with would-be adventurers chatting around desks, consulting with something posted on the wall.

「There’s a lot of stuff here」

I’ve been seeing it since I passed through the city walls but it seems that we don’t have just humans, there are also other races in this country, such as people with beast ears, even a bipedal bear-man going on shopping.

The adventurer’s guild is also no exception, they have several beastmen in the mix.

I went to an open spot, greeted by a receptionist in her early twenties with animal ears.

Based on the shape of her ears, is she a canine type?

I was tempted to ask what specie she is, but she looks like asking what business I have so I have to be quick.

「I’m looking for jobs, how’s the process?」

「Is this your first time here? Are you affiliated with other guilds before?」

She speaks businesslike, but that doesn’t feel bad.

「I haven’t. This is the first guild I’ve gone to」

「Is that so? I don’t see someone dressed like you that often so you must be from another country?」

「Something like that」

「I see. Then I’ll give you a brief explanation」

I was prepared to answer further questions about where I’m from but they didn’t dig deeper.

She explained to me that the adventurer’s guild is just a job hunter’s agency in essence.

The work varies, and the rewards depend on what you do and the results you bring. The examples were gathering plants, minerals, and other materials, or defeating monsters in the vicinity.

Other spot requests, such as obtaining designated items or defeating monsters or bandits, are done with a contract with the guild, with proper deadlines and penalties for failure included.

Even so, I had an inkling of what to expect, but I guess this world had monsters.

After the explanation, the dog-eared receptionist looked at me and Euphy behind then opened her mouth.

「Are the two of you looking for jobs?」

「Yes, I’d prefer an easy one for beginners」

「You seem to go light, have you left your arms behind?」

「No」

「The easy jobs that are done inside the city are assigned to the younger people, so there are only outside jobs」

Are you willing to work? It hurts when she asks like that.

「Well, I was thinking of doing those, yes」

「Then that’s fine. How about we start by collecting in the forest at the end of the road from the east gate? There’s a shallow area in the forest, there are small animals and monsters in there, so it should be relatively safe. Oh, by the way. You should register in the guild before anything. It’ll be crowded once you get back」

She said, then she brought in a melon-sized black sphere in front of me.

「Place your palm on top of here…」

「O-Okay」

I was wondering how that would work, but the receptionist had a small blade, and before I knew it, she quickly slid the blade to my index finger.

「W-Woah」

「Please touch it with this finger」

「W-What the hell? Geez」

When I did when I was told, a geometric pattern of light appeared inside the sphere.

At the same time, I felt something draining my fingertips. Then Blood ran down my fingers gathered at the back of my hand, and created a pattern.

Then, a woman who seems to be covering herself with feathers appeared above the circle…at 12 o’clock if we were looking at a clock…creating a sword symbol at the back of my hand.

「Eeh, what’s this?」

「You will be bringing your companion as well?」

「Eh? Ah, yes please. Uhm, can you heal up my fingers?」

「It’s just a thin slice, just lick it off to heal it」

「R-Right…」

The slave merchant has a better service than this. I was tempted to say that but I’m afraid that I’ll offend her so I stopped.

Then, this is the same line as the magic in the slave contract.

This is scary!

I stared at the back of my own hand and shuddered, then Euphy also did the same thing.

「The contract’s done. We’ll look forward to seeing the results. The requests are out all the time, so please take a look at there before you go…」

「Oh, thanks. Oh, one more question. Do you have any inns you can recommend? If possible, I’d like to know their prices too」

The receptionist looked at Euphy then back to me, paused to think, then answered after condensing the information.

「Let’s see. The inns I could recommend to you two would cost you at least five coppers per room. You have a woman with you so I cannot recommend cheaper ones. You should pay that much」

Err, the inn I’m staying in costs five silver per night so that’s a tenth.

That means we have to move there by the next day.

I had other questions to ask but her face says “Anything else?” Not wanting to entertain anymore, I walked away and decided to check the requests.

「Let’s see. Goblins, Wolves, Pigs. Ugh, there are even zombies? These guys are undead, aren’t they? What’s left is, morning sun grass? What kind of grass?」

The spot where the requests are written out had several wooden boards stuck on the wall, which was written in deformed katakana letters.

I can read it just fine.

Come to think of it, I never had difficulties with language since coming to this world.

Well, it’s convenient so I shouldn’t worry too much about it.

They probably did a lot of things to me when I got summoned anyway.

「Euphy, can you distinguish what’s on the requests? Like, this morning glory grass?」

「I think I should」

「Then, let’s test this one. But first, we need to gear up. We’re buying Euphy’s clothes, and a sword, I guess. Oh, just to tell you beforehand, we’re going a test run for now. I won’t tell you to fight right away」

「I don’t mind if that’s your order」

「No, don’t get fired up in that direction. It’s only in worst case scenario」

She’s a former young lady, but for some reason, Euphy’s quite warlike as she leaves the guild and looks for a store.

Perhaps because this street is home to the adventurer’s guild that we found a store with a sword and axe sign just around the corner.

I thought that the way the weapons and armor lined up looked like a grocery store, but it wasn’t quite right with the items.

「Hey lad, you seem unarmed despite coming out of the guild. Want to buy stuff?」

As I stopped in front of the store, an old man who probably was the storekeeper, spoke to me.

「Sure, I want a sword she could handle and some kind of armor」

「Is that a slave? You’re buying a young lass for a bodyguard? Are you cray…」

「I know what you want to say but, I’ve got no fighting strength. So she’s taking charge since she has combat skills」

「Oh. Don’t be too harsh on her」

What’s this sudden sermon session.

I don’t know if it’s because Euphy’s cute, or maybe the people in this world don’t like using slaves that much.

「So, what’s your budget?」

「A few silvers」

「Sorry, that’s too vague. Hmm, maybe this and this」

The old man chose leather armor protecting only her torso and a sword.

The armor is shaped like a sleeveless down jacket and treated through the neck, secured with a string on the side. While the sword…based on the color, this isn’t iron

「What kind of metal is this?」

「The shortsword? That’s bronze, as you can see. Your budget won’t allow for any more than that」

「Bronze? What kind?」

「Hey, you’re bad at jokes. It’s been a while since I heard that. Gahaha」

I’m not sure if the translator function works for puns.

Still, this old man laughs loudly.

「Lad, you can buy a cheap iron sword elsewhere, but you’d rather buy a bronze one from us than the half-baked one from someone else. The cheap ones are usually mixed with scrap, so they bend easily. In that regard, we have no intention of selling inferior products, that’s why we charge a reasonable price. A silver coin is only that much, so take it

「Then, I’ll take it. How much for all?」

「Six silver coins. I’m still giving you a cut you know? Seeing that the lass will use it」

「Six silver coins… Oh well, I’ll pay for it. Ah, test out the sword first Euphy」

I took the sword from the old man and handed it to Euphy behind me.

It’s a chunk of metal so it’s pretty heavy, but can Euphy use this?

Amidst my concern, she grips the sword and lightly shakes it to the side.

She looked like an expert, but her eyebrows furrowed for some reason.

「Was it heavy?」

「N-No, that’s not the case, but somehow… It’s not the sword’s problem」

I’m a little curious, but if she says that she has no problem with it then that’s fine.
