VR Battles (2)
The monster that appeared in front of me was a small cat not taller than thirty centimeters (11 in) and with hardly any mana. It was a tier zero creature that could barely be considered a monster.
Similar creatures appeared in front of each applicant.
The creatures did not attack immediately. Most likely, it was done that way so the applicants were not caught by surprise.
I raised an eyebrow and studied the creature carefully. I was very curious about this creature that was obviously fake.
I wondered if I could create similar creatures in my dreamland. Should I try it?
While I was lost in my thoughts, I saw a small flash of light coming from beside me.
One of the applicants had attacked and killed the monster in front of him. One second later, his body was covered in light and sent to the next level.
After him, more flashes of light appeared. One student after another killed the monster, advancing to the next level.
I stopped thinking nonsense and decided to focus on the examination for now.
The first monster was very weak, so after a quick spear thrust, I killed it. Then, my body was covered in light and I was transported to the second level.
There were several people on the second level, but I did not have time to pay attention to them. As soon as I appeared, a monster attacked me.
‘Hm? So the monsters take the initiative to attack after the second level, huh.’ I thought to myself while stepping aside to avoid the monster cat. The second monster was slightly stronger than the first, but it was still a tier zero monster.
I cut open its back with the tip of my spear, killing it instantly and advancing to the next level.
The level three monster was still a cat, but its strength had increased again. Just like the previous two times, I dealt with it easily.
Like that, I continued advancing through the levels.
Finally, when I reached the tenth level, there was a change.
This time, the monster was not a cat, but a tier one wolf. It was still a weak monster, but it was considerably stronger than the previous monsters.
“So after ten levels, the tier of the monsters increases by one, huh,” I spoke to myself while piercing the wolf’s head.
In other words, after the tenth level, you will face tier one monsters, after the twentieth level you will face tier two monsters, and after the thirtieth level, you will face tier three monsters.
If every level gives ten points, it means that I need to defeat at least one tier five monster to get five hundred points.
I remember that the highest record in this test is 720 points. Does it mean that someone managed to kill a tier seven monster during the entrance examination of Sanctuary’s First?
As expected, the world is filled with geniuses.
I stopped thinking about unnecessary things and continued going through the levels.
After the twentieth level, the monster changed again. This time, it was a tier-two ape.
By this point, there were not many people around me. Most of the applicants had fallen behind and only a few were still advancing quickly.
However, I was not the fastest. Based on the rankings on the sky, several people were advancing faster than me.
I was not worried, though. This test was not about how fast you advanced, but about how many monsters you killed.
I had experienced a lot since I ‘died’ in my first dungeon. I knew that rushing for success could lead to making mistakes.
Just like that, I reached the thirtieth level.
But at this point, the situation changed.
Instead of the white world, I was transported to a forest. Before I could process the situation, I felt a sense of danger coming from behind me.
Instinctively, I jumped aside, barely avoiding the attack of the cougar-like creature.
When the cougar realized that it had failed the attack, it turned around and attacked again.
This time, though, I was ready. I hit its head with the shaft of my spear, making it dizzy. Then, before it could recover, I thrust my spear to its neck, killing it.
The cougar’s body turned into bits of light and disappeared as I advanced to the next level.
Just like before, I appeared in a forest, but this forest was completely different from the previous one.
“So the environment changes every level after the thirtieth level, huh,” I murmured while looking around.
However, the theme should be the same before reaching level forty.
Unlike the previous monsters, the monster of this level did not attack as soon as I appeared. Instead, it moved stealthily between the trees while waiting for an opportunity to attack me.
“The monsters are also smarter. I think that a lot of applicants will fail here.”
This was not enough to defeat me, though.
Using my senses, I located the cougar’s position and attacked.
My sudden attack caught the cougar by surprise. It reacted quickly and tried to change its location, however, I was faster.
With my first attack, I made a hole in one of its rear legs. The cougar roared in pain and tried to bite my arm, but I calmly pulled my spear out and avoided its fangs.
Then, I rushed towards it and swung my spear, cutting the monster’s cervical spine, but I did not kill it immediately and instead analyzed the situation.
“Mm… Although it’s indeed harder than the previous levels, I should not have a problem before reaching level forty.” I concluded.
I had not used my skills yet, so I still have a bit of leeway. However, I should be careful from level forty onwards.
After organizing my thoughts, I swung my spear and killed the cougar, advancing to the next level.
Next, I went through levels 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, and 39, finally reaching level forty.
When I appeared at this level, my body tensed up in preparation for any attack.
But to my surprise, I was not immediately attacked. Instead, I felt a cold wind that made me shiver.
I furrowed my brows and looked around, only to open my eyes in surprise.
This time, the level was at the top of a snow-covered mountain. There was snow falling from the sky, strong and cold winds, and a cliff a few meters away, limiting the range of my movements.
At that moment, I heard a loud cry.
*Screeech!!!*
Looking up, I saw an eagle flying in the sky and looking at me with a hostile expression.
“So that is the enemy this time, huh.”
Just then, the eagle flapped its wings.
“I have a bad feeling about this,” I murmured.
In the next second, the wind around the eagle converged on its wings.
“Fuck!” I cursed.
And several wind blades were shot towards me.
