Easy Survival Life Chapter 091 Tapioca

Cassava leaves are green and they have a long and narrow shape.

Even if it’s toxic, nothing will happen just from touching it.

That’s why I harvested them with my bare hands.

「 This island sure has everything. 」

This island has an array of plants and animals suitable for living.

On the other hand, there are no life-threatening mosquitoes or other pests.

I would love to continue living my survival life on this island, taking it easy.

「 I want to stay on this island, but I’m looking for a way to return to Japan. Isn’t that just silly? There we go! 」

I pull out the cassava plants forcefully.

After lightly brushing off the dirt, I threw them into the bamboo basket and returned to the hideout.

Turning the cassava into tapioca is a simple process.

However, it usually requires a few days of work.

Since we don’t have the time, we’ll use the shortcut course.

First, make the cassava flour, the source of tapioca.

Cassava flour looks similar to wheat flour and can be used as a substitute.

That aside, bread made from cassava is chewy and delicious.

To make cassava flour, we have to first peel the cassava.

Its wrap is poisonous so it’s better to peel it thickly, just to be safe.

It would look a bit wasteful, but safety first is the motto.

I peel it off and cut the unnecessary parts.

For example, the roots have to be cut off because it contains toxic substances.

Other toxic areas are gutted.

At this point, we already dealt with the poison.

Even so, I still want to make double sure.

And so, I’m soaking them in boiling water to detoxify them.

「 The coconut milk is ready! 」

Kageyama came to report while I was working.

He’s holding a lacquer bucket filled with coconut milk.

I took a peek and a strong aroma assaulted my nostrils.

The aroma’s a bit too strong that it stinks.

But it should be delicious to drink.

「 Thanks, get it chilled 」

「 Then I’ll place this in the cold storage 」

The cold space is the back of the hideout, commonly known as the fridge area.

Kageyama brought the lukewarm coconut milk.

「 I guess I need to hurry up now. 」

I grind the cut cassava.

I mashed it until it got gooey and wrapped it in cloth and squeeze it.

I won’t toss away the squeezed juice.

After all, even this juice can become tapioca.

「 We harvested a lot and that’s plenty 」

The truth is, the pressing process takes quite a bit of time.

Squeeze, rest, squeeze and repeat.

This time, it’s just one cycle because we’re going for the shortcut.

This means that we can only produce a small amount of cassava flour, but it’s covered by the amount of harvest

「 Phew 」

When I finished squeezing the cassava I harvested, I let them rest.

It’s said that I’ll leave it for two hours, but in this case, one hour should do.

The squeezed juice separates by letting it rest.

That part becomes the cassava flour once it dries out.

The more time you spend the clearer the separation but in this case, we only need to make it a rough one.

After one hour.

The juice started to separate, albeit roughly.

「 It’s enough for a big haul 」

Satisfied with the separation, I begin the next process.

All the unnecessary liquid gets scooped out and discarded.

What’s left is white sticky liquid.

What’s left is to transfer it to another container to dry

「 And we’re waiting for it to dry 」

This is the critical moment.

If you wait until it’s dry, you’ll wait for day s.

Naturally, it won’t make it in time for the festival.

And so, I proceed to work on it without letting it dry out completely.

The tapioca-making process begins with the cassava liquid, not the flour.

Turning cassava to tapioca is easy even for an idiot.

After mixing the flour with hot water, I just pinch it off and roll it to any size.

Boil it for about 20 minutes then once it’s wet with water, it becomes tapioca.

However, we’re not using cassava flour.

We’re not mixing hot water because I’m using liquid.

The spherical sphere is made with half-dry sticky cassava liquid.

Boil them once they have a spherical shape.

「 Please, make it safe and sound 」

This is the first time I’m making tapioca with cassava liquid.

More importantly, this is my first time making tapioca.

That’s why I have no idea if this will work.

(If I fail, then my ace is gone)

I began to boil the tapioca with a strange sense of tension.

The water boiled for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to keep the shape of the tapioca.

「 Good! 」

After the boiling water, we’re going for cold water!

While boiling, I pour in the water from the lake I prepared.

………………。

………………。

…………。

「 Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 」

It’s completed safely!

It looks like the tapioca you see in stores.

Bite.

I took a bite to test it.

「 It doesn’t have a taste 」

It’s almost tasteless, no exaggeration

In Japan, tapioca’s not flavored.

They soak it in sugar water to sweeten the surface.

However, we don’t have sugar water here.

And since it’s soaked in just water, it doesn’t have any faint sweetness.

That said, the sweetness of tapioca’s only a supporting role.

Tapioca’s valuable for its appearance and texture.

That’s why this shouldn’t be a problem.

「 It took me a lot of time 」

The sun is beginning to set outside the hideout.

I think it’s about 1800, but it’s already dark.

Compared to July and August, the sun goes down sooner during October.

「 Kageyama, you here? 」

I shouted, praying that Kageyama’s nearby.

「 Did you call for me? 」

Then, Kageyama appeared.

It seems like he just dashed like mad from outside the hideout.

I wonder what he was doing? Anyway.

「 We’re done, so help me put these in the cups 」

「 Roger! 」

「 I can already imagine the surprised look from the girls 」

「 I’m looking forward to it! 」

We head to the cold storage with rhythmic steps.
